Name: Ruby
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Occupation: Actress
Side: Civilian
Weapon: No formal weapons training, but some experience with knives and hand-to-hand combat necessary for traveling.
Techniques and Magic: None
Family: Pearl (Mother), Gub (Father), Shirley (Grandmother), Rube (Grandfather - Deceased), Ruby (Great Grandmother - Deceased)
Character Personality: Ruby's just your regular type A southern sweetheart... with a kick. While altogether friendly and happy to help someone in need, Ruby's no pushover, and she doesn't put up with anyone's shenanigans for long without busting out a good lecture. She knows what she wants and isn't shy about going after it, though the tease in her does occasionally like to bring out the shyness in others. She can be a little manipulative and over-dramatic, but never in a devious or ill-intended way.
Character History: Raised by her parents and grandmother in a little village near Pinnacle Rocks, Ruby grew up in a rural environment. While her father was usually busy with yardwork or crafting things, Ruby spent most of her time doing housework, reading, and playing pretend with her mother and grandmother. She was infatuated with plays from an early age, when her mother taught her how to read using Lord Avon's works. This life also had her learning quite a bit in the way of culinary arts via her family's passed-down recipes, most specifically desserts.
Ruby left home at eighteen and set out to Lindblum with a small caravan that was passing through, where she picked up some combat knowledge in order to defend herself on the road. She and the caravan parted ways upon her arrival to the city, where she began scouting out theaters to hire her as an actress. With no success and much frustration, Ruby finally ran into Blank, who informed her of Tantalus's need for an actress. She joined up with them and stayed with the troupe for nearly a year, adopting the role of makeshift big-sister for much of the troupe and often providing meals for them. It was only when the kidnapping in Alexandria went awry and Ruby was left behind before her big acting break could even take place that she parted ways with the boys.
Stranded and in need of employment, Ruby noticed that the town had a lack of entertainment and decided she was just the woman to provide it. With the former bartender Ashley's encouragement, she opened up a mini-theater in an alleyway with what money she had from working with Tantalus. It luckily survived the attack during the war, and she took it upon herself to revive the spirit of the townspeople by providing them with the enjoyment they needed through her plays.
To this day she still runs the mini-theater and exchanges letters with friends and family often. Baku has invited her to rejoin Tantalus, but she insists that she is happy with her theater in Alexandria, though she knows she always has a place among her Tantalus family.
Character's Physical Description:
Quotes: "That girl's wilder than a buckin' bronco!"
"Whut in tarnation?"
"I reckon you're more stubborn than a grumpy mule!"
"Well fry my hide!"
Roleplaying Sample: Ruby hiked up the rolled-up rug under her arm, climbing carefully up the steps that fed into her mini-theater. One little theater shouldn’t get so darn dirty, she thought, not with how small it was! But that was the price she had to pay for pursuing her dreams, she supposed. Cleaning wasn’t so bad, really, it was just having to clean virtually all by herself that made it a daunting task.
She unfurled the carpeting once she reached the top of the stairs, shaking out the dust and dirt and draping it over the railing with a sigh. It was a nice night — not too cool, but a comfortable relief from the heat of the day — and the crescent moons that shone overhead painted the quaint little town with a pretty, pale glow. The reconstruction had been going along pretty well over the past two years, and much of Alexandria was already restored, much to Ruby’s relief. Nobody had forgotten the day of the attack and how frightening it was; Ruby herself could remember ushering people down into the theater to hide out from the monsters. She hated seeing the town in shambles like it was afterward, but she felt grateful that things hadn’t been worse.
Nowadays, everything was mostly peaceful again, but there were still few people that walked around at night out of some instinctive paranoia, she noted with a glance left and right at the empty streets. Perhaps it would still be many years before the effects of the attack wore away completely; well, maybe they never fully would for the survivors that remembered it. But Ruby wasn’t one to wring her hands and fret about the ghosts of the past. There was too much life to be lived to let fears box you in, she believed.
That was why she felt her theater was so important — more important than it had been before. The people needed somewhere to go to forget about their troubles for a while and just have a little fun. The plays she put on were mostly light-hearted after the attacks, because she knew that was just what everyone needed, not more hopelessness and misery. Tragedies would just be too close to home. Everyone needed a laugh!
Well, that was probably enough retrospect for one night, she figured, turning back to the steps of her theater — then she caught sight of a figure out of the corner of her eye, squinting into the darkness. Surprising that someone aside from her had decided to venture out at this hour!
“Howdy,” she greeted him — or her — with a smile she hoped was visible under the moonlight. “Goin’ for a late night stroll?”
